The relationship between Pokuwaa's mother and her sons-in-law is not cordial due to barreness experienced by Pokuwaa who is her daughter.Due to the matrilinear nature of Ghananian culture,It behooves a woman to bear a child in order to lay claim of its custody.Pokuwaa married two different husband before the third one which we experience the plot directly from the novel.Through flashback,Pokuwaa recounts how she divorced the first two husbands as her mother was instrumental to her action.Notably is the second marriage with kwaku Foru who she left due to a trivial issue.Apparently,her mother advises her into it.In essence, Pokuwaa's mother chaperon her in her marital experience which becomes fruitless.Kwadwo Fordwo is also despised by Pokuwaa's mother due to the derby in concieving.Pokuwaa is determined to stick to him against all odds and the incessant pressure mounted by her mother.

The use conch as a symbol of authority and rule of law is conspicous for the democratic process on the island.The conch is founded by the intellectual character(piggy)who identified and trains Ralph on its use.The hold of the symbol is an authority in the first assembly.It witnesses the electron of Ralph as the elected head of the boys on the island.Thus,it symbolises the emergence of democracy and rule of law to thrive.Also,in the second assembly it behooves every participant to hold on to it as a symbol of authority and orderliness to contributes to discourse on survival on the island
